Meeting deadlines can be stressful. However
it is part of work life. Having deadlines that are set with too little thought
and thus, cannot be met, taking work home and thus, throwing life out of balance
or jumping from one unfinished project to another is a source of stress that
must be addressed. The key to time pressure is task management. Time itself
cannot be managed. It is the context within which tasks must be managed. To
reduce the stress of time pressure try these things:
- Do not passively accept deadlines. Discuss
deadlines with your boss after reviewing the new task in the context of all
current activity. Be prepared to negotiate alternative deadlines.
- Learn as much as you can learn about project
management. Much time pressure is a product of poor project management.
- Learn as much as you can learn from the
literature about 'time management.' Start with a good electronic or paper
calendar and us it effectively.
