The structure or skeleton of most organizations
is based on the Roman army with the generals at the top and the foot soldiers
at the bottom. While the information age is demanding new and flatter models,
you may be in an organization with a traditional structure. There is stress
at all levels. At the top are external pressures of the market, in the middle
are the stresses from above and resistance below, and at the bottom is the stress
of limited control over your job. The more layers there are the more likely
it will be that there will be significant levels of stress. There may be little
you can do about this structure. But here are some tips for reducing stress:
- Learn both the formal structure and the
informal structure. The more you know the better you can use it.
- Identify ways to improve your job. Implement
those that you can and discuss your improvements with your boss.
- Don't wait. Seek clarification and communication.
