The Importance of Preparation

A general lack of planning is often to blame when people are unsuccessful in making lifestyle changes. This is true for the smoker who wants to quit, the "couch potato" who wants to be more active, and yes, even for those who are trying to change their eating habits.

What's a Great Starting Point for Anyone?

Since one of the main reasons many people want to change their eating habits is to improve their health, a great place to start is the doctor's office. A general physical, with some baseline lab work, will help determine your present condition. During this process, you can inform your doctor of your intentions and ask for some general guidance.

If I Need to Lose Weight, Am I Willing to Stay on a Sensible Diet?

Many people make poor choices when deciding which diet to go on. It's only natural to want to follow diet plans that promise us the best results and yet require the least amount of effort or commitment. The problem with these "fad diets" is they work temporarily at best. When you return to normal eating patterns, you gain the weight back.

It's important to understand this up front. Accept the fact that you may only lose an average of 2 to 3 pounds per week when you follow a healthful diet, but commit to your weight loss plan. Following a diet of this nature does work, is easier to stick with over a long period, and allows you to keep the weight off that you lose. That's because it's really a lifestyle change, as opposed to a diet.
