Anytime you try to make a significant change, you go through stages. Some of the stages you move through pretty quickly, while others may take months or even years. What makes the difference between being successful at changing and not being successful is how you navigate the stages. As a first step, read the descriptions of the stages below and consider where you are in the cycle.
Stage |
Description |
Challenge | In the Challenge stage, you are not ready to consider changing and have no intention of doing so. You have a habit, such as smoking or being disorganized, that needs to be changed for your health or personal success, but nothing has happened yet to make you consider changing your habit. |
Awareness | In the Awareness stage, you have at least admitted to yourself that it might be worthwhile to consider making a change - but are not ready to do anything about it. |
Commitment | In the Commitment stage, you are ready to make a commitment to yourself and at least one other person that you are going to make a change. You haven't decided how you are going to go about changing yet, you are just willing to commit to making a change. |
Preparation | The Preparation stage is where you begin to plan and schedule your changes. Whether it's setting a date for your last cigarette or visiting gyms you could join near your home or office, good preparation is a key to successful change. |
Action | In the Action stage you actually begin implementing the changes you have planned! |
Maintain the Gains | This is the hard part. In this stage you work to turn your new behaviors in to habits. |
Celebration | In the Celebration stage, you reward yourself for successful change! |
