So what is Emotional
Intelligence and what does it have
to do with being more resilient?
"Emotional Intelligence" is an idea that was first used by psychologists
John Mayer and Peter Salovey in 1990, and later made popular by Daniel
Goleman in his book on the subject. It refers to your ability
to use your
emotions intelligently and appropriately in different situations.
Emotionally intelligent people:
- Are
able to accurately recognize and understand emotion in themselves
and in others.
- They are able to appropriately
express emotion and can control their own emotions, helping them to grow
emotionally,
intellectually and spiritually.
- The bottom line? Emotionally
intelligent people intentionally use their thinking and behavior
to guide
their
emotions - rather than letting their emotions dictate their thinking
and behavior.
People who are highly emotionally
intelligent tend to also be highly emotionally resilient.
