Eight: Work Conditions

While most managers would say they want to create working conditions that facilitate the work that needs to be done, too often there is more talk than action. They skimp on lighting. The CFO says all pencils must be less than two inches long before being replaced. The air conditioning is set so low the place could qualify as a cryogenic chamber. Working conditions can be a major source of stress. What can you do about it? Try these ideas:

First look at any changes you could make on your own to improve conditions. Even if you cannot do a lot, you will improve your credibility by showing you are willing to make some changes on your own.
Make a list of the things that might facilitate improvements in performance and production, if certain conditions were to change. Have friends review your list before offering it to management.
Set-up an appointment with your supervisor to discuss the work conditions. Don't make demands. Offer to help. And ask for suggestions as to what you might do.
