While a few aspire to be leaders, most stumble into the role through promotion. They get their training through trial and error. So we should not be too surprised that this is a major source of stress. Some were very good in a technical area and are thrust into leadership. Technical skills do not make a leader. Some leaders are task focused while others are supportive. Unfortunately our style is not appropriate to all situations. You do not select your leader. So what can you do about it? Try these things:

See yourself as a catcher while your leader is a pitcher. You can signal what the best pitch may be. They pitch. You signal.
Become a student of the leader's styles. Assume part of your job is making them more effective.
Remember that leaders need positive feedback too. When compliments are due, give them.
