Sharpen The Saw

You probably already set goals that are related to what your boss wants out of you. That is not a bad place to start since failing to do so can lead to a premature career change. What is too often missing from goal setting is what Steven Covey calls ‘sharpening the saw’ and that is vital. The reference is to the workman who is too busy sawing to stop and sharpen the saw even though it is a vital tool. Covey suggests that we should set goals in each of these areas:

  • Physical
  • Social/Emotional
  • Mental
  • Spiritual

In the physical area you must include such things as exercise and nutrition. The social area is about relationships and people. Mental means new learning and new knowledge. Spiritual is about connecting with aspects of living beyond day to day routine. It is about something greater than you.
