Strengthening

As we age our strength declines. In order to maintain a level of fitness, and to keep our everyday activities from seeming to get harder, strengthening exercises are a necessity.

There are two main ways to do strengthening exercises. You can use the resistance and weight of your own body to build your strength. Push-ups, sit-ups, lunges, and isometric arm and abdominal exercises are examples.

Or, weight training can be used. There are advantages and disadvantages to free weights vs weight machines. What is important is to find out what works best for you and stick with it. Weight machines can be better for beginners because they help you maintain correct body position and do not require a workout buddy or trainer to help you maintain your form. Whichever form of weight training you choose, have a trainer take you through the weights the first time and show you the proper way to use them.

But I do not want to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
