Introduction To Six Sigma

DMAIC

The word is deh-may-ihk. It stands for:

  • Define
  • Measure
  • Analyze
  • Improve
  • Control

DMAIC is the five step performance improvement cycle common to Six Sigma organizations. To define means to identify the problem in as precise a manner as possible. Measure means to quantify the problem. This allows us to refine our definition. Often this results in breaking down the problem into steps, phases or divisions. Analyze involves checking our hypothesis about the problem. This process includes clarification of root causes of the problem. Improve means to build test solutions that remove the root causes of the problem. Finally, after testing, control means to make the final changes to correct the problem. You repeat the DMAIC cycle over and over as you apply Six Sigma to the activities of your team.
